How Freelancers Can Accept Crypto Payments

Most invoicing advice assumes PayPal or Stripe just works. They don't for everyone — both routinely refuse to pay out to certain countries, freeze accounts without much explanation, and take a cut on top. Crypto is a practical fallback: no processor account to get approved for, near-zero fees, and it settles in seconds instead of days.

Why USDT on TRC20

USDT (Tether) is a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, so you're not exposed to price swings the way you would be holding raw Bitcoin. TRC20 is USDT issued on the Tron network — transaction fees are usually a few cents, versus several dollars on Ethereum (ERC20). For a freelance invoice, that difference matters. See the live fee comparison for current numbers.

Steps to set this up

  1. Get a Tron-compatible wallet (most multi-chain wallets support TRC20 — check before you commit).
  2. Share your wallet address with the client, ideally as a QR code so they can scan it from their wallet app instead of copy-pasting a long string. The free crypto invoice generator builds this QR code into the invoice itself.
  3. State the amount and due date clearly in your invoice, same as you would for a bank transfer.
  4. Confirm the payment landed by checking the public blockchain explorer for your address — no bank statement needed, the ledger is public.

Risks to know about

Checking payments without a dashboard

You don't need a hosted payment processor to know if you got paid — TRC20 transfers are on a public ledger. crypto-pay-cli is a free, open-source command-line tool that checks incoming USDT transfers to your address and generates a receive QR code, using the public TronGrid API directly. No account, no API key.
